Chapter 52 Farewell
Chapter 52 Farewell
"Teacher..." Lizzie broke the silence in the quiet interrogation room.
"Don't call me teacher, you don't deserve it."
Ron lowered his head, his voice hoarse from dehydration, his tone filled with cold disappointment.
After a long silence, Ron raised his eyes, his gaze grave. "You've certainly surprised me. I know you want to kill me, not Old Zeng. Tell me, why?"
Lizzie hesitated for a moment before softly saying, "Teacher, I've finished the assignment you gave me, but I haven't had a chance to show it to you yet..."
"Answer my question," Ron said, his tone becoming more forceful and his eyes sharper.
Lizzie composed herself and said seriously, "If you hadn't overheard the conversation in the alley last night, none of this would have happened today."
"You mean that night at the colleagues' party?" Ron asked thoughtfully. "When I went out to sober up, I did overhear something."
"That's right, it's about Guixu and the 'Moonlight Project'." Lizzie stood up and paced back and forth.
"I told my father about you overhearing the plan, and he wanted to recruit you into the team."
However, during the background check, a small discrepancy was discovered—your information stated that your sister worked at a well-known factory in Yorktown, but upon inquiry, it turned out that her start date and the time when the factory manager changed did not match up at all.
She stopped and stared intently at Ron: "You're more than just a teacher, aren't you?" Her tone held a barely perceptible hint of sadness.
Ron frowned slightly. He wanted to say something, but his expression suddenly became listless, and a trace of fatigue appeared in his eyes.
He slowly leaned back in his chair: "Who I am is no longer important."
"Who do you work for?" Lizzie pressed.
"Just like you, only on a different side." Ron looked at her calmly. "I'm dead. Take Su Zixu and Liu Runyu away from here."
At this moment, the screams from next door gradually subsided, and footsteps came from outside the door, clearly indicating that the interrogators were changing shifts and taking a break.
Lizzie drew a dagger from her waist and handed it to Ron, her voice deep: "I am just my father's knife."
"It doesn't matter, just promise me first."
"I promise to get them both away safely."
A moment later, the corridor lights came on.
Lizzie gently closed the door, stroking the ring Ron had given her. A look of confusion and pain flashed in her eyes before she finally put the ring away from her body.
She grew up in an orphanage and was taken away by her father, where she spent her days surrounded by weapons. The only time she was happy was the three years she spent attending school with Ron.
Wiping away the tears from the corners of her eyes, Lizzie quickly composed herself and turned to walk towards the other interrogation rooms—it was already noon, and she had to find Tian Tian as soon as possible to formulate a follow-up plan.
Lizzie used a wire to pry open the interrogation room next to Ron's. Su Zixu lay helplessly on the floor, his face covered in bruises and swelling.
Upon seeing that it was Lizzie, Su Zixu struggled to lift his eyelids and mumbled two words: "Bomb..."
Lizzie leaned down to listen carefully, and her heart tightened—the bomb they had obtained was supposed to be given to Tian Tian this morning, but it had been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.
"I understand. You and Liu Runyu stay here for now. I'll go find Tiantian and come back to pick you up right away." After saying that, she left quickly and went straight to Liu Runyu's room.
The moment Lizzie pushed open the door, she couldn't help but shudder: Liu Runyu looked miserable, his fingers and toes had all been cut off, nails and human skin were scattered on the ground, his left eye was filled with fine needles and he was already blind, and he had fainted.
Lizzie was slightly surprised. She had thought Liu Runyu was just a coward, but she hadn't expected him to be so principled.
She quickly fetched antibiotics and hemostatic powder, treated Liu Runyu's wounds, gave him the medicine, and then went to report the interrogation results to the team leader.
She deliberately obscured the responsibilities of Su and Liu, shifting the main blame to a prison guard who "committed suicide out of fear of punishment during the struggle," and successfully evaded the issue with her vivid and emotional narration.
In the afternoon, Ron's body was removed, and Kurt was locked in an interrogation room to await questioning.
After arranging for medical staff to watch over Su and Liu, Lizzie immediately went to the women's prison area to look for Tiantian, but she couldn't find her anywhere.
In the canteen, the female prisoners were eating, while Lizzie paced back and forth searching, but still found nothing.
"Oh no, could she have gone to the library?" Lizzie's heart tightened, and she turned and rushed out of the cafeteria, heading towards the library.
On the fourth floor of the library, Quaid leaned back in a large chair, a hamburger in one hand, talking on his computer while making smacking noises.
"Don't worry, Dad. I've memorized all the core technologies. I can build another set when we get back, and it might even be better than the current one."
"Sergei's escape pod doesn't have a code, so I have to go by myself. The more people who escape, the greater the risk of our secret being exposed."
He spoke without any warning, completely unaware that a pair of eyes on the ceiling were watching his every move.
