Chapter 956 Delaying time
Chapter 956 Delaying time
"Is that all you can do?" Gu Bei's tone was as flat as if he was just commenting on the weather. His fingertips loosened slightly, and the monkey, whose wrist he had grasped, suddenly lost his balance and stumbled backward, bumping into Ma Zi, who had hurried to support him. The two of them cried out "Ouch" and fell into a ball, one clutching his arm, the other clutching his waist, looking as miserable as a spinning top rolling in the mud.
Gu Bei stood up straight, his eyes lightly sweeping over the two of them. He seemed to be at ease, but his fingertips were quietly clenching in his sleeves - he was counting the time silently, and he could clearly hear the sirens coming from the distance. The alternating red and blue sounds were the target he had delayed until now getting closer step by step.
Ma Zi was furious at the blow, howling and lunging again. This time, he'd learned his lesson and didn't confront him head-on. Instead, he winked at Monkey, and the two of them attacked from both sides, one on each side. Monkey retrieved his fallen short stick and targeted Gu Bei's lower body, the wind whistling as Ma Zi swung his casserole-sized fist to block his upper body. The two of them were surprisingly more coordinated than before, creating a sense of oppression.
Gu Bei tapped his toes lightly, his body darting left and right, nimble as if dancing on the edge of a knife. Ma Zi's fist grazed his shoulder three times, the wind whipping up causing his collar to rustle. Monkey's short stick nearly swept at his ankle twice, but he dodged it by the hair. His movements seemed slow, even a little stagnant, yet he always managed to twist and avoid vital points in the nick of time. Each dodge seemed like a deliberate attempt to guide the attack, silently drawing the two men's attacks towards each other.
"Bang!" With a dull thud, Ma Zi's punch missed, landing solidly on Monkey's back. The monkey felt the pain, and the short stick in his hand flew out of his hand, hitting Ma Zi squarely on the brow bone. "Ouch!" Both men cried out in pain, one clutching his back and grimacing, the other clutching his bleeding brow bone and gasping for breath. They glanced at each other, each seeing the uncontrollable anxiety in the other's eyes.
"This kid is really evil!" Monkey rubbed his aching back, his voice trembling, "He didn't even try his best, he's just playing cat and mouse!"
Ma Zi spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva, breathing heavily, "Who cares if it's weird or not! I'm going to break one of his arms today and let him taste my power!"
The two men lunged forward again, howling, only to see Gu Bei suddenly pause, as if tripped by a stone on the ground. His body swayed slightly, revealing a clear flaw. Ma Zi was ecstatic at this, thinking that the other party was exhausted. With a sly grin, he swung his fist straight at his face. Unexpectedly, Gu Bei's luring move was a feint to lure the enemy deeper. He suddenly lowered his shoulders, like a leopard in preparation, and slammed into Ma Zi's abdomen. At the same time, his elbow thrust back like lightning, hitting the pursuing monkey in the throat.
"Ugh!" Two muffled groans sounded almost at the same time. Ma Zi was like a crushed shrimp, holding his stomach and arching his body, unable to speak due to the pain; Monkey covered his throat and retreated repeatedly, his eyes full of fear, and could only make a hoarse sound of air leaking from his mouth.
Gu Bei glanced at his watch. The sirens were so close he could even see the flashing red and blue lights on the corner. He deliberately took a half step back, his footing unsteady, giving Ma Zi, who had recovered, the opportunity to bump into him. He stumbled back a few steps, seemingly in a state of panic, but in reality, he was keeping a safe distance, his eyes fixed on Xiao Bao.
In the shadows of the street corner, Xiao Bao watched the farcical fight, his brows knitted into knots. He had originally thought that even if Ma Zi and Monkey couldn't take down the beggar, they would at least have the upper hand. But now, the two were being played like clowns. Every time Gu Bei "ran into danger," it was deliberate. His calm demeanor didn't seem like he was risking his life at all.
"Something's wrong..." Xiao Bao muttered to himself, feeling a strong sense of unease. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. "This guy isn't fighting at all. He's... timing it?"
Gu Bei caught a glimpse of Xiao Bao's face changing suddenly from the corner of his eye, knowing that he had seen through his intentions. He no longer concealed his intentions, but quickened his pace, continuing to fight with the recovered Monkey and Ma Zi, each move aimed at delaying the fight rather than inflicting heavy damage.
"Not good!" Xiao Bao reacted suddenly and shouted, "This beggar is stalling for time, waiting for the police! Everyone else, follow me, let's go in and arrest him!"
Before he finished speaking, he had already rushed towards the gate of Ran Qiuye's house.
Gu Bei's heart tightened—the Public Security Bureau hadn't arrived yet! His eyes flashed, and he dodged the monkey's sweeping kick. At the same time, he reached out and grabbed the thick wooden stick that he had prepared in the corner. He had shaved the burrs off the stick in advance, and it felt heavy in his hand, just prepared for this moment. He swung the stick, sweeping it out with a gust of wind, forcing back the two people who had rushed over. He stared at Xiao Bao and others who were rushing towards him with a sharp gaze, and defended the gate with all his might.
Gu Bei watched Xiao Bao heading towards Gu Nan's house, sweat pouring down his forehead, but he was completely overwhelmed. More and more people gathered around him, and although he knocked a few unconscious in the chaos, the rest of them pestered him like crazy, their fists and clubs raining down. He could only barely block them, unable to move an inch, and could only watch helplessly as Xiao Bao got closer and closer to his target.
Xiao Bao rushed to Gu Nan's door in a few steps, thinking of pushing it open and entering, moving so fast that the people inside would not have time to react. But when he pushed, the door didn't budge at all - it turned out to be bolted from the inside. He made a "tsk" sound, and a hint of impatience flashed in his eyes.
Inside, Ran Qiuye's heart was in her throat. She'd heard the commotion outside earlier, and she'd tried to convince herself it was just the moviegoers arguing, but she hadn't imagined it was really directed at her. She peeped through the crack in the door. Figures swayed outside, the muffled thud of fists and feet clashing, and the constant shouting and cursing. It frightened her so much that her hands and feet were cold, and her lips were trembling.
She had intended to quietly open the door to see what was going on, but just as she touched the latch, she heard a muffled thud outside, as if someone had been knocked to the ground, followed by the sound of even more intense fighting. She was completely afraid to move, her back pressed tightly against the door, her heart pounding as if it was about to burst.
"Gu Nan, please come back soon..." Ran Qiuye looked out the window at the dark night sky, her voice tinged with tears. She didn't know where Gu Nan was, nor did she know why these people had come to her house. She felt that everything before her was like a nightmare from which she couldn't wake up.
As she was daydreaming, she caught a glimpse of Gu Shiwan still sleeping soundly on the bed, her little brows occasionally moving, as if she wasn't woken by the noise outside. She breathed a sigh of relief and subconsciously moved towards the bed, wanting to be closer to the child.
The monkeys outside the courtyard were almost driven crazy. He had originally intended to lure Heizi away, but unexpectedly a beggar appeared on the way. The beggar looked skinny, but his skills were terrifyingly agile. He knocked down his two men in just a few moves.
